When working on pictures in Photoshop, there can be several ways to do different tasks and end up with similar results. My favorite way to dodge and burn (lighten and darken) certain parts of a picture is by creating a layer where I can paint with a brush where I want to darken or lighten.
Here are a few reasons I like to dodge and burn my pictures:
I can make certain areas lighter or darker to direct the viewers eye through the picture.
I can create a vignette effect on the edges of pictures.
I can even out the light from one side of a picture to the other side.
I feel like a painter by brushing on your picture. Even though this is not a legitimate reason.
